Outbreak of Epidemic Cholera in the Garrison and District of Kohat, 1867

Cholera broke out at Peshawur about the middle of May, and the utmost precautions to prevent its advent that a strict quarantine could enforce were at oneo adopted. Traffic through the Kohat pass was discouraged as much as possible, and quarantine posts weie established at Fort Garnet, (the Kohat mouth) and on the other minor passes in the hills through which travellers from Peshawur could penetrate. News of the appearance of cholera at Rawal Pindi w.is received early in July, and further precautions were taken to prevent travellers and soldiers returning from furlough coming into the district, riicse were the two stations having most communication with Kohat, and the quarantine on both was strict and effective. At Fort Garnet a Native Doctor was posted, and all those coming from Peshawur were halted for four days under his cognizance, or until they were supposed to carry a clean bill of health. In the station the lines of the various regiments were kept scrupulously clean, the sale of unwholesome fruits and vegetables in the bazar interdicted, and the conservancy of the city looked after. Having thus done all that our human foresight could suggest to save us from the scourge, we trusted in Providence, and waited anxiously-.
